Replacing Glass Panes in Alpine Storm Windows
My focus on this topic is not to promote any company but my concern is on helping those who have trouble replacing glass panes in alpine storm windows. I am sure my recommendations can be applied in other storm window types as well so even if you do not have Alpine ones just read on.
Replacing glass panes in Alpine storm windows is easy. Take a tape measure precisely measure the width and length of the groves that the pane will fit into. Cut the glass1/8 inch smaller in the width and also the length. When you center the new pane there should be a 1/16 inch gap on either side of the glass and the rabbet grove. This gap leaves room for the glass to expand.
Supplies include goggles, gloves for removing broken glass, a receptacle to put glass in and throw away, pliers to remove glass and a screwdriver which should be a flathead.
Put the gloves on and take the screwdriver and very carefully remove the vinyl spline. You are going to have to put it back in so do not damage it. The spline makes the seal between glass and metal which is most important. At this point put on your goggles and using the pliers remove the pieces of glass from the frame, use the pliers to pick up any pieces that are dropped.
Take the screwdriver and wrap it in wet paper toweling and push through the rabbet groves to clean them of glass. Put the glass pane in the rabbet groves. Make sure you have 1/16 inch gap on all sides. Use the screwdriver, start at a corner and push the spline back into the frame. That is basically it on replacing glass panes in alpine storm windows.
